Microsoft Product Activation is a form of digital rights management used by Microsoft Corporation in several of its computer software programs, most notably its Windows operating system and its Office productivity suite.

The procedure enforces compliance with the program's end-user license agreement by transmitting information about both the product key used to install the program and the user's computer hardware to Microsoft, inhibiting or completely preventing the use of the program until the validity of its license is confirmed.
The procedure has been met with significant criticism by many consumers, technical analysts and computer experts, who argue that it is poorly designed, highly inconvenient and ultimately does nothing to prevent software piracy. The process has been successfully circumvented on multiple occasions.

What is Activation, how does it work?
Activation is a means by which we validate licenses for our products.
Unfortunately, because of the very high levels of piracy, copying of keys, and credit card fraud, we were forced to take steps to protect our products by implementing a system to enforce the terms of our user licensing agreements.
Such systems are now commonly in use in software sold over the Internet, and are known as activation systems, where a customer installing a licensed product is required to activate the license, thereby validating against a central server (at the vendor's site) that the license is valid, was issued by the vendor (and not a crack-key generator) and is able to be used legitimately by the customer.
PureSight 2.0 for WinGate's activation system was designed to be easy to use (a simple wizard guides you through the necessary steps to automatically activate your licenses), and flexible enough to allow customers to cope with common problems, such as having to reinstall a server.
The activation software is included with PureSight for WinGate, and WinGate itself, and may be run from the PureSight for WinGate installer, from GateKeeper, or by itself directly. The activation client takes care of all communications with Qbik's activation server, and retrieves the necessary activation files required for PureSight for WinGate to run on your machine.

It's required
You have 30 days after installing Windows to activate it online or by telephone. If this 30-day period expires before you activate Windows, you will not be able to use every feature of Windows. You can regain full use of your computer by activating Windows.

Windows XP is an operating system produced by Microsoft for use on personal computers, including home and business desktops, laptops and media centers. First released to computer manufacturers on August 24, 2001, it is the second most popular version of Windows, based on installed user base.

The name "XP" is short for eXPerience. Windows XP, the successor to Windows 2000 and Windows Me, was the first consumer-oriented operating system produced by Microsoft to be built on the Windows NT kernel. Windows XP was released worldwide for retail sale on October 25, 2001, and over 400 million copies were in use in January 2006. It was succeeded by Windows Vista in January 2007. Direct OEM and retail sales of Windows XP ceased on June 30, 2008. Microsoft continued to sell Windows XP through their System Builders (smaller OEMs who sell assembled computers) program until January 31, 2009. On April 10, 2012, Microsoft reaffirmed that extended support for Windows XP and Office 2003 would end on April 8, 2014 and suggested that administrators begin preparing to migrate to a newer OS. The NT-based versions of Windows, which are programmed in C, C++, and assembly, are known for their improved stability and efficiency over the 9x versions of Microsoft Windows.

Windows XP presented a significantly redesigned graphical user interface, a change Microsoft promoted as more user-friendly than previous versions of Windows. A new software management facility called Side-by-Side Assembly was introduced to ameliorate the "DLL hell" that plagued 9x versions of Windows. It is also the first version of Windows to use product activation to combat illegal copying. During Windows XP's development, the project was codenamed "Whistler," after Whistler, British Columbia, as many Microsoft employees skied at the Whistler-Blackcomb ski resort. According to web analytics data generated by W3Schools, from September 2003 to July 2011, Windows XP was the most widely used operating system for accessing the w3schools website, which they claim is consistent with statistics from other websites. As of April 2012, Windows XP market share is at 27.3% after having peaked at 76.1% in January 2007.
